Current Edition of the National Electrical Code (State-by-State) As of March 1, 2025, the 2023 NEC is in effect in 17 states; the 2020 NEC is in effect in 21 states; the 2017 NEC is in effect in six states; and the 2008 NEC is in effect in two states. Note: The 2023 edition of the NEC was issued by the NFPA Standards Council on August 12, 2022. The effective date was September 1, 2022, when it officially became available for federal, state, county, and municipal governmental entities to update their electrical installation regulations.
