NFPA 70, also known as the National Electrical Code (NEC), outlines requirements for the safe use and installation of electronics. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) updates the NEC every three years to keep up with developing technologies. In this article, we will look at some of the updates made in the 2026 edition of the NFPA 70.

Key Expansions

Sleeping Quarters - New SPD (Surge Protective Device) requirements have been put in place for fire, police, ambulance, rescue, and ranger stations.

Standby Systems - All legally required standby systems must have a Type 1 or Type 2 SPD installed on switchboards and panelboards that supply them.

Elevators - All elevator motors are now required to have an SPD installed directly adjacent to the disconnecting mechanism for all elevator motors.
