Surge Protectors for Lighting Equipment (ANSI C82.77-5) Lighting Equipment Today's increased reliance on very sensitive electronics makes surge protection an important topic for all kinds of indoor and outdoor lighting. The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety study found that $26 billion dollars was lost due to non-lightning power surges. In addition, there are about 25 million lightning strikes in the US each year that cause between $650M to $1B in losses according to the Insurance Information Institute, State Farm©. The latest release of ANSI C82.77-5 specifies voltage surge limits and testing requirements for all types of lighting equipment found in residential, commercial, and industrial applications that are connected to commonly distributed 60 Hz AC power line systems listed below. a)120 V, Single Phase b)220/230 V, Single Phase c)208/240 V, Single Phase d)277 V, Single Phase e)347 V, Single Phase f)480 V, Single Phase g)480 V, 3 Phase To maintain the expected ROI, end users should select lighting equipment that's designed and fully tested to comply with ANSI C82.77-5, otherwise additional surge protection may be needed to assure lighting equipment can operate under such conditions. This table shows the C82.77-5 location category criteria for common indoor / outdoor lighting applications: Location CategoryCriteria Category ATypically indoor applications: outlets and long branch circuits, all outlets more than 10 m (30 ft) from Category B, and all outlets more than 20m (60 ft.) from Category C. Category BTypically indoor application, more severe than Category A: feeders and short branch circuits, distribution panel devices, bus, and feeder industrial plants, heavy appliance outlets with “short” connections to service entrance and lighting systems in large buildings. Category CTypically outdoor applications, more severe than Category A or B. This is for outside and service entrance, service drop from pole to building, run between meter and panel, overhead line to detached building, underground line to well pump. Selecting the appropriate SPD Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) shall be UL1449 Type 4CA or better including Type 1, Type 2, Type 1CA and Type 2CA. It should be tested to the appropriate exposure level based on the application or installed location (Reference Location Category above). UL1449 Type 4CA Surge Protective Devices (SPD) have undergone more stringent safety testing than UL1449 Type 5 Components including the critical abnormal overvoltage - limited current testing. The coordination of the SPD is key in making sure that the lighting system and control devices pass testing and not only the SPD passes by itself. CITEL can provide manufacturers with full C82.77-5 surge testing for all exposure levels in our surge laboratory in Miramar, FL.
