Surge Protection for Shale Oil and Gas Production

Electrical Submersible Pumps (ESP)

OVERVIEW

Today's increased reliance on very sensitive electronics makes surge protection an important topic for Oil and Gas industry. Oil and Gas equipment necessary for upstream operations such as Production are exposed to environmental conditions. During peak storm season equipment is subjected to increased lightning events. Ever more present are the frequent switching events within the system during normal operation. Lightning events and switching events, at play, independently of one another, cause electrical surges that can negatively impact the equipment runtime.

This page discusses how to best protect your Oil and Gas equipment for upstream operations such as Production. Each section will conclude with a Surge Protective Device (SPD) Protection Point which identifies where and what SPD to use.
